REVIEW-IN-PROGRESS: OVERWATCH (PS4, Xbox One, PC)

It's Overwatch day! The day that you, like me, rushed home to play the new multiplayer first-person shooter from Blizzard Entertainment!

But what do I think of the game so far? Read on for my early thoughts...
According to the blurb on the packaging, Overwatch allows you to "Join the ranks of a legendary force of soldiers, scientists, adventurers and oddities known as Overwatch".

But there's more: "Choose your hero and clash on the battlefields of tomorrow. Bend time, defy physics, and wield extraordinary powers in the ultimate team-based shooter."

Not the penultimate team-based shooter... but nothing less than the ultimate team-based shooter! Best get it while you can, everyone: there aren't going to be anymore team-based shooters after this one, apparently!!!!

Unfortunately, I'll have to take their word for it, as it has been downloading an update file for two
hours now, and still has 83 minutes left to go.
Picture
I tell a lie. It has just gone up to 95 minutes.
Picture
I got my hopes up a while ago. I restarted the process, as it seemed to be taking far too long, and then it downloaded the entire update file in about 10 minutes.

Then it started downloading something else. Or started again from the beginning. Either way, it has been taking a very long time, and I'm slightly losing the will to live. It's making me so depressed I'll be going back to Homefront: The Revolution at this rate. You know: as a form of self-harm.

I'm sure it'll be worth the wait though!!!! Overwatch IS the ultimate team-based shooter after all!!!!
Picture
So, I don't really have a lot to offer by way of an opinion unfortunately... Apparently, the copy I got from Amazon is the "Origins Edition" and comes with a "Noire Widowmaker Skin".

Of course, as exciting as that sounds, I've no idea what one of those might be, given that - more than two hours after unwrapping the game and shoving it in my PS4 - I'm still not able to play it.

94 minutes left to go now. I simply can't wait!!!!
Picture
Oh. It has just gone up to 97 minutes.
Picture
99 minutes...

Perhaps a Noire Widowmaker Skin is a type of novelty prophylactic. I didn't see anything when I opened the box. Maybe it fell out...

I had a meeting today. I was out and about all day yesterday. I'm a bit knackered, and I was really looking forward to coming home and playing Overwatch. Just veg out on my special sofa. You know: get my game on.

Honestly. All the way home today I was strutting down the street all like "I'm gonna get my game on". People were looking at me. They were whooping and applauding, so infectious was my excitement.

"U-S-A! U-S-A!" they chanted, for they knew that I would be getting my game on the second I walked through the door.

Incidentally, I just paused the download and restarted it, and now there's 5 hours left to go. So, that worked well.

This is progress apparently. This is the world we have made.

I suppose I could review the packaging art.

And here is my review of that: s'alright. It's got a sort of manga person on the cover, and she/he has a couple of guns. And some goggles on.

Perhaps she/he has been doing some welding. Or is going skiing. It's pretty radical stuff. Really, y'know, really original. Tells me everything I need to know about the game.

I'm pretty sure if I hadn't bought it sight unseen with my 1-Click ordering, I'd have walked into Game, and it would've leapt out of the shelves at me.

I'd have taken one look at that anything-but- nondescript cover and gone: "WOW!!!!! I GOTTA HAVE ME THIS GAME!!! IT'S LIKE NOTHING I'VE EVER SEEN!!!! MY MIND IS REELING!!!! I'M GONNA SIT DOWN, RIGHT HERE, IN GAME, AND JUST RUB MY KNUCKLES AGAINST MY TEMPLES, WHILE WHIMPERING, BECAUSE MY BRAIN CANNOT PROCESS THE IMPROBABLE LEVELS OF GRAPHIC DESIGN ORIGINALITY!!!!"
Picture
The back of the box shows some other manga-y people. One of them is hovering and shooting missiles. Another one has a big hammer. There are some sci-fi buildings in the background.

Groundbreaking. I'm playing the game vicariously through these powerfully evocative visuals, which suggest exactly the sort of excitement I can expect from this: the game Overwatch!!!!
Picture
Just restarted the PS4, as the download was stuck on 6 hours. Now it keeps flickering back and forth between 3 and 4 hours left. 104.8MB out of 2.533GB done.

I might go and sit in the garden. It's a nice evening. Sausage and mash for tea tonight. Can't wait to poo that out tomorrow.

I too often judge my evening meals on poo-osity fishfingers tonight.

Were you perhaps not aware of Blizzards file servers and their famous lack of speed and stability?

To be fair, was it Blizzards or Sonys servers?

As far as my home network goes:

PSN - £40pa - Approx 30mbs

XBL - £40pa - Approx 20mbs

Steam - £0pa - Approx 200mbs

Battle.net client on PC downloads pretty quick for me. Said platform is also £0pa. Same applies to Origin and Uplay. Free and fast.

Outrageous that they charge £40 a year for that garbage. You know what Sony/MS? Give me 200mbs downloads for my £40 and shove your "free" games where the sun don't shine. They are usually just some unheard of indie rubbish or a AAA that I already own or is only £5 on ebay!

Well I know that the US East Coast servers take much longer than they should on PC.

The Battle.Net client downloads quickly but installing a game or updating a large patch can take hours... and I have quite fast cable internet. Steam and even Origin are both very fast while BattleNet never is.

20mbs? 30mbs?TWO HUNDRED Mbs?!?! Do you live in the future? What's it like there? Shiny? I live in Devon (which is not THE future, just my future) and occasionally I see 1mbs. Really. I'm glad I don't have a ps4 or xbone.

My main question about this game is why Tracer, despite being the game's most iconic character (so far) sounds like the spawn of a night of passion between Barbara Windsor and Bert the Chimney Sweep. And a car horn.

I'd have to play it on mute, and definitely without a headset. I'm not sure I could her signature cry of "Ere comes the cavalry luv, cor blimey guv'na gawd sayve the Queen fish and chips Mary Poppins!" blasted into my ear hole every two minutes.

Shame though, her character design is cool: Burning Rangers by way of the RAF.

The sad thing is that Cara Theobold is actually British.

Funny, I was originally going to post something along the lines of "couldn't they have just hired an actual British person?"

Had to laugh out loud!

Just last night I was capturing some footage of Megadrive classic Streets of Rage II, and caught myself thinking 'takes ages from boot up to playing the game' - can't have been more than 20 seconds!

I don't play on the Xbox (360 - it's the newest thing I own!) much, as I know that I'll likely endure an hour or two of pointless o/s updates or game patches. The process also leaves me wondering if all the games that used to work are still going to work afterwards...

The newer the console the worse the experience...

Oh man, yet another way the internet has burst my gaming bubble. Launch day patches and updates are a total buzz kill, like a cockblock when your pants are already round your ankles.

I think a Blizzard dev (my reasoning for him being a Blizzard dev is that he wears an Overwatch jacket and WoW hoodies/shirts (and he looks like a gamer - you know, nerdy, overweight, beard, stinks), and Blizzard HQ is just around the corner) gets donuts in the same place I get my donuts on Friday mornings - would you like me to take your disappointment up with him and/or punch him in the back of the head, Biffus?
