IT WAS 22 YEARS AGO TODAY...

Unexpectedly, a Twitter person called The Industrious Ant has unearthed the very first edition of Digitiser, from January 1st 1993 - back before we were even born. If that doesn't get your 2015 off to a tolerable start, then it's likely nothing will...

I feel like Howard Carter sliding the lid off a sarcophagus over here, only to be confronted with a pixellated image of his own corpse. It's sobering to think that Digitiser has been off the air for longer than it was on it (the air).

Also, I like how the format/colouring of the letters page never, ever changed from day one.

Nice work to whoever recovered that, I hope they can do some more. I came across an old magazine article from prior to Digitiser's launch, it includes a couple of screenshots of what must be test pages. I see the sonic graphic was reused in this first edition. You can also see it located in the mind games section, as mentioned by Mr. Biffo on the recent Retrocollect podcast.

Here's a pre-launch article from another magazine, apparently;

"Teletext Ltd are so certain Digitiser will be a massive success they're hailing January 1st as D-Day!"

Happy D-Day!

Insanity! Thanks for those articles PD - can we borrow them for FB? I think it was Mean Machines or CVG which ran a story that had a dig at our press release, because they'd not 'got' a gag in its title. We set out our stall early...

Feel free to use them for whichever nefarious means you desire. These were from Sega Pro and Sega Force respectively, I think I have a few more post launch ones from other Sega magazines.
Yeah, I remember the "feud" with Emap. I'll see if I can dig up anything about that. In the meantime here's a good article from someone who worked for your predecessor "FX" on Oracle. A few screen printouts there from a service which has long since faded into complete obscurity compared to the impact that Digitiser had.

I also came across a teletext "soap" that ran for over a thousand episodes, much of which has been archived thanks to screen printouts from a teletext editor. That made me wonder if maybe there are some teletext editors with collections of Digitiser screen printouts somewhere. I somehow doubt that you're still in contact with many of those though.

If this has been found then somewhere the letters and odd article that Digi published will also be out there too!

Oh yes, I know about that. My previous comment was written with gin and should have read: 'If this has been found then somewhere the letters and odd article that Digi published THAT I WROTE will also be out there too!'

Gin.

Lovely gin.

Just the other day I was thinking to myself "why has no one remade mediocre prehistoric platformer Chuck Rock? Why God why?".

Forgot the bad guy was called 'Garry Gritter'.

I won't believe a word of it, until someone pokes it with a stick. Pass me my stick!

What happened to the regulars from the digitiser days from 2000 upwards and how come they have not appeared on game central? Also has any effort been made to find and contact them to invite them to game central?
