Earlier this week, in the wake of HTC unveiling its virtual reality headset, Vive - which it is developing in conjunction with Valve - a HTC spokesperson mentioned her hope that the Half-Life franchise would be coming to the system.

Had this been the case, it could've been the first concrete confirmation that Half-Life 3 is in active development. Consequently, it's fair to say that people jumped on the announcement like a herd of esurient oxen.

Unfortunately, it now transpires that HTC's spokesperson might've been overdoing it with the enthusiasm pills.

HTC's brilliantly-named Cher Wang told the BBC: "We are co-operating with Half-Life, and I think... I hope, you know, it will be on it."

Now Wang has been forced to clarify her somewhat hesitant comments.

"I would like to apologise for any confusion caused when I referred to individual games titles," she whistled.

"In response to a question on specific games, I misspoke when I referred to our working together with Valve on a particular game, when instead I meant our collaboration with Valve on developing next-generation virtual reality experiences for gaming."

So. Read into that what you will. The Vive is currently scheduled for release later this year.

Everybody Cher Wang tonight!

I really don't get all this anticipation for HL3.

Maybe I'm the person who points out that the emperor has no clothes but the first two really haven't aged well.

HL2 seemed really original when it came out and I'd put that down to the physics effects which we take for granted nowadays but wowed me at the time. Not just talking about the gravity gun but pretty much everything from the most mundane things that we saw right from the start.

I don't know what would separate HL3 from what has become a pretty stagnant genre. You already have Bioshock, Wolfenstein and the Metro games so what can HL3 do different?

I mean perhaps VR is the revolution that it needs. If they could create the first game that really exploits the full potential of VR then just maybe it can justify its existence.

You know what the greatest revolution I've seen in an FPS since HL2 is? The Wii controls on the expert setting for Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Aiming with the remote and using the nunchuk to rip shields of enemies etc. The remote was like the best parts of a mouse/joystick/light gun combined.

Yet sadly that method was never used again.
