ASSASSIN'S CREED SYNDICATE: TRAILER ANALYSIS

Oh look: the next full-blown Assassin's Creed title has been named (Syndicate), and we've been graced with a trailer.

We know these things: it's set in Victorian London during the Industrial Revolution. We know you'll play a character called Jacob Fishenchips. And we know - based upon the pre-alpha gameplay footage - that it'll look Unity-pretty, you'll be able use ziplines, "handsome crabs" and "carry-ages" to speed through the "'ustle and bustle" of the city. It'll also probably be filled with every cliche about Victorian London that you can possibly imagine. Otherwise, it looks like business as usual.

So that you don't have to, we've broken down the trailer, and formed a series of opinions that we suggest you appropriate as your own. Click through for this, please. Please click through for this.

0.04 - The eyes... the dead, dead eyes.
Picture
The trailer kicks off with CGI Victorian assassin Jacob Fishenchips pretending to be in Gangs of New York. His plastic-impassive face breaks into a slight hint of a smirk just before the scene cuts away, but they've not bridged the uncanny valley yet. However: quilted lapels. Practical and stylish.
0.06 - A glimpse at the trademark Assassin's Creed multi-belt leather cummerbund.
Picture
Also: the Assassin's Creed leather gauntlet, and untucked white shirt. Why don't they tuck their shirts in? Why are their belts always above the untucked shirt? It's an OCD sufferer's nightmare.
0.07 Top hats stay on when you stab people.
Picture
Top hats appear to be the most impractical headwear of all time. However, we appear to be wrong in this assessment - as the trailer shows, top hats stay on regardless of how stabby you get. No wonder Jack the Ripper wore one. How they stay on we don't know; velcro? A concealed strap of some sort? Spikes jabbing into the scalp? Whatever the method, it clearly works, allowing assassins and murderers alike to stay stylish while they disembowel.
0.10 New Doctor Who title sequence
Picture
Starring Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman.
0.21 "It's a bloody marvellous time to be alive."
Picture
The first snatch of dialogue suggests what we've been expecting: people talking like Cockney stereotypes. The next line has "bloke" in it. We're expecting "mate" to be peppered liberally throughout the script.
0.23 Cockham Merchants
Picture
Look: over to the right of St Paul's Cathedral there - it's an advert for Cockham Merchants. We don't know if that's a contraction of Cockney Ham Merchants, or they're merchants who sell "cock ham", or whether we're not reading it properly, and it actually says "Cookham Merchants".
0.35 Officer Chumbly
Picture
Here he is! It's Officer Chumbly - Jacob Fishenchips' best friend, a bumbling "rozzer" who will be providing comic relief throughout the game. Look out for the sequence where Chumbly gets his foot stuck in a bucket, and trips into a latrine!
0.42 Fagin's here too!
Picture
What's Victorian London without everyone's favourite grotesque, anti-semitic stereotype? Jacob Fishenchips will encounter Fagend while learning to be a thief and assassin. Later, the pair enact  an elaborate song and dance sequence.
8.50 The Ripper Himself
Picture
Among the mysteries set to be revealed by Assassin's Creed Syndicate is the true identity of history's most famous serial killer, Jack The Ripper.
1.00 Surprised man
Picture
Whenever Jacob does something surprising, the game will cut away to this Victorian gentleman looking surprised, and saying "Hunh??!".

Not trying to be a wag or anything, but having never played the games I've never understood why a master assassin wears a hood that gives absolutely no peripheral vision. Does some of the clever-clever dialogue in the games explain this?

It would be fun, for the purposes of this article, if "Hood, glorious hood" rhymed with "Food, glorious food".

But it doesn't. It just looks like it should.

When Guyman Protagonist goes into stealth he take his top hat off and when he comes out of stealth he puts it back on. So where's he storing it while shanking people up..?
