PLAYSTATION VR: WHERE'S ALL THE HYPE? - by Mr Biffo

It's a little over a month until PlayStation VR is released. I mean... I think so anyway.

They are still releasing it aren't they? Alright, we've only just been spat out the other side of summer - a time when, traditionally, most messages fall on sunburnt ears - but the PSVR hype machine has yet to show up to town.

And it needs to show up, because, well, get this: after the initial early adopter madness, sales of PC VR headsets - the Oculus and Vive - have pretty much ground to a halt. The speculation is this: beyond the early adopters, nobody is willing to spend thousands for the privilege of putting a nausea-inducing helmet on their heads. You can get much the same effect by wearing a pig-slop bucket.

Add to this the sheer lack of games available - or any one piece of software which gives VR a conclusive reason to exist - and it isn't hard to see why sales have dribbled to a tawdry halt.

But wait! PlayStation VR! That's going to bring VR to the masses without the need for a rilly rilly, like, expensive PC! Even the headset is relatively affordable! And it's out soon!

So where's the hype, Sony? Even I'm starting to think that PSVR was some sort of weird fever dream caused by licking an infected stetson.

DIARY: SEAN MURRAY - thE REASON I CAN'T ENJOY THE SUCCESS OF NO MAN'S SKY IS BECAUSE OF DRACULA

"As I write this, we are nearly a month since the release of No Man's Sky, the game I dedicated the past four years to creating, and the previous decades of my life imagineering in my subconscious mind. I can't take all the credit, of course. It was a team effort. Everyone here at Hello Games really gave it their all. I can't thank them enough.

"It has been an interesting four weeks or so, and I have spent much of it attempting to reclaim my life, to regain some sort of equilibrium, after spending so long dedicating myself to one goal: providing you all with the greatest procedurally-generated space game we were capable of.

"Unfortunately, my attempts at relaxing have been hampered by the actions of one individual: Count Dracula, the famous vampire."

GONNA MAKE YOUR OLD GAMES NEW: TEN OLD GAMES WHICH NEED TO BE BROUGHT BACK

Picture
One of the biggest challenges facing any game publisher is introducing a brand new concept or game world to players.

This is why we get so many sequels: they're a safer bet than an entirely original IP. And yet there are so many old games which remain unexploited - games which never got a sequel, or franchises which were left to die and/or stagnate.

Here are just ten which could be brought back to do good things.

WILL THESE PICTURES OF STEVEN SPIELBERG AND VIDEO GAMES MAKE YOU LIKE HIM MORE... OR LESS?

Hollywood royalty doesn't get any more lauded than Steven Spielberg. Therefore, it's refreshing to know that the director of E.T., Jurassic Park and Schindler's List is also an avid gamer - like you and me! Why, even his name literally translates as "Ice-cool player".

Stevo has also been involved in the creation of several games, from the point and click adventure Dig, to Boom Blox, Medal of Honor, and Steven Spielberg's The Director's Chair.

The question is: does his love of video games make you like him more, or convince you that it is nothing more than an insincere affectation, designed to make him look more ordinary, like that ruddy hat he wears? Here's a gallery of photos, which should give you pause for thought.

Well, this week's letters page is rather anaemic I'm afraid. This is what happens if you don't bother writing in. This isn't even the cream of the crop. It's literally all we received.

Please put an end to this tawdry state of affairs by sending emails for next week's letters page to here: digitiser2000@gmail.com

Last week we took a look at how old game logos are, often, more interesting than the logos of most modern mainstream games. Today it's time to look at console branding: is it more interesting today... or the opposite of today?

24 YEARS STILL ISN'T LONG ENOUGH - by Mr Biffo

My partner disagrees that I'm not a natural showman.

She's used to me twatting about like an arse, or - as happened yesterday - encouraging the kids to shout "Losers" to a long queue of people outside the school shop as we drove past, because we had the foresight to get their uniforms at the start of the school holidays.

I insist that I'm not a showman, or a performer of any kind, and she never believes me. Thing is, it's one thing to behave in a certain way with those who love you, and another to do it before strangers.

I don't actually mind talking to an audience - I've done a fair bit of it over the years. For some reason, I have the kind of job that people seem to find interesting, and want to hear about. So long as I'm expected to be me - and not "perform" - then I've no stage fright whatsoever. I mean, I'll be up and talking to 140-odd of you on October 1st, and I'm fine with that. No fear.

Plus I've no issue whatsoever with those who are life's extroverts and performers. If anything, I look at them with envious eyes, that they can be so un-self-conscious. I suppose what I fear is "performing" for an audience, and making them think I think it's all about me, rather than being there for them.

That has always held me back, and caused me to tie myself in knots. It's like trying to balance on the middle of a see-saw, while simultaneously trying to not be noticed.
