Your feedback on Digi Live has been invaluable. I worked very hard for months on trying to conceive of a version of Digitiser that would work as a live show, but I had no idea whether it was going to succeed. I knew I wanted a communal feeling, I wanted to break down the barriers between the performers and the audience (that's what the Pac-Man intro and Antique's Roadshow were all about, and why they were near the start of the show), I wanted everyone to feel involved. But... I'd never done anything remotely like this before, so it was all being done on instinct, rather than experience. Your laughter and applause on the night went a huge way to convincing me that we'd achieved it, but up on stage we couldn't really hear or see the audience; it's kind of like being in one of those sensory deprivation tank things. I could hear the audience a bit better backstage, but there I couldn't really hear or see what was happening on stage. So, my experience of the show itself was sort of weirdly incomplete, until I started hearing from all of you, and seeing your photos and videos. But! Your tweets and letters this week... man... I think we actually did it. I should never really underestimate the Digi audience's capacity to share my sense of humour, but it always surprises me, because I know it's a weird, niche, sense of humour. There were things I hadn't even imagined might happen, such as the social aspect for all of you, quite how much the show gave so many of you a confidence boost, and shine a little ray of light in your lives, how well Chunky Fringe went down... We just wanted to put on a funny show, but it became so much more. I think I speak for all of us - me, Larry, Sarah, Paul, Sanya, everyone else behind the scenes - when I say it means so much that our hard work had such a positive effect. Anyway. We've got a lot to get through. Along the way I'll try and give some behind-the-scenes insights. Let's go! If you'd like to appear here, or you've something you'd like me to give some attention to in our occasional Plug Zone, or you've got a picture of a bin you wish to share, please send your filthy emails to this place here: digitiser2000@gmail.com Biffo and Octav1us take a look at the bizarre Victormaxx Stuntmaster - the first ever VR headset for the home, compatible with the Super NES and Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Also, Biffo plays a lovely song.

I was a semi-vegetable by the time I got home (what sort of semi-vegetable? A carrot-esque, if you must know). If you were there, you probably saw that it was quite a physical show. That was on top of loading in, setting up, rehearsing the day before etc. etc. We all, I think, put everything into the performance on stage. Certainly, Gannon was a sweaty, broken, mess by the end too. I've never seen him look so wrecked. Then there was the chaotic load-out - which tons of you helped with, so thank you - but because we'd overrun so much, there was sort of no downtime. We'd planned to have half hour backstage just to decompress a bit before heading out to meet you all, but we didn't get that. There was also something of a dressing room invasion, which I regret, as we'd have benefited from some headspace. Basically, if you thought the show was chaos - what happened afterwards was twice that. I tried to grab five minutes in the carpark once the stage was cleared, but I was gasping for a drink. I'd lost sight of Larry, Sarah, and Paul I only managed to speak to Paul, briefly, through the bar window. I headed inside, with the aim of having a beer, and never made it. I wanted to see them and tell them how brilliant they'd been, but never managed to. I only saw Larry right at the end of the night, I dunno how long I was chatting in the corridor, and doing the selfies thing, but long enough that the bar closed. And then they started turning off the lights. And there was more chatting outside. So, it ended up being hugely mentally and emotionally draining, as well as physically. But at least I was sober, and could drive home. This is it. Digitiser Live weekend. The result of literally months of work. And yet somehow, there's still always a massive crunch at the end... hence the lack of written stuff on the site recently.
Festivities kick off at 2pm on Saturday with the free Chunky Fringe event, which features panels on teletext recovery, Mr Biffo's Found Footage, and classic-era Digi. Special guests will include Ashens and my Digi co-founder Tim "Mr Hairs" Moore, as well as assorted exhibitors. Huge thanks to Chris Bell and David Walford for organising it. At 6.30pm, doors open to the main hall, and we recommend you be in your seats by 6.50pm to make sure you don't miss anything. The show will run until approximately 9.15pm, and there's a bar in which we'll be milling around afterwards. If you're a ticket-holder, you should've had an email containing travel information (it's SO easy to get to, with good links from both Euston and Watford Junction meaning you don't even have to travel into London), and explaining that there are no physical tickets; your name will be on a guest list. Thanks to the venue adding two whole rows of seats, we still have tickets available from this site. It's not too late. Lastly, a reminder that if you have any old retro tat you want to bring along, we might take a look at it in our Antique's Roadshow And Tell segment. We can't promise we'll get to everything - it's a packed show - but we'll get through as much as we can. And that's literally the only spoiler you're getting. Much as I've been itching to blab, the surprises will have been worth it. And that's it, except to say we'll see many of you on Saturday night for a once-in-a-lifetime evening of nonsense. We'll never do it this exact same way again. And you know us: who can say what unplanned chaos will ensue on the night? If you'd like to appear here, or you've something you'd like me to give some attention to in our occasional Plug Zone, or you've got a picture of a bin you wish to share, please send your filthy emails to this place here: digitiser2000@gmail.com Biffo and Gannon play around with the vintage Armtron robotic arm from Tomy/Radio Shack... while Gannon gets his nip tweaked, and Biffo tells a harrowing story.

I don't want you to know what's coming. There are parts that are pure crowd-pleasing, parts of it that will drop your jaws, and parts of it that I can't quite believe we're doing.
And what's more... we've put it together in such a way that even we - those of us on stage - won't know what's coming next. A sort of semi-structured chaos has become our calling card, so the majority of the show will be broken down into segments that are unscripted. Oh, we've got games, we've got set pieces, and there is a script, and we're rehearsing... We need to know what should be happening at any given moment. We need to know what props we need, learn the musical and video cues. We need some semblance of form, so that we can always get back on track, even loosely. We need to know which guests are doing what and when. But we're not writing down any jokes, or anything like that. We're giving ourselves the freedom and permission to go off-piste. I want to capture the chemistry and rawness of our YouTube videos; an edge-of-our-seats atmosphere, teetering on the verge of collapse at any minute. When we step out on Saturday night... none of us really have any idea where it's going to take us. Rather then be terrified by this as you might think, I'm exhilarated by it. I'm excited. It's playing to our strengths as a group, and I can't wait to find out what the show will be. One week until Digitiser Live. Goodness. Inevitably, as seems to happen with all my projects, the work done in advance never seems to avoid a last-minute crunch.
Added to that, I've been dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome over the last couple of weeks, and trying to rest my typing arm whenever I can, hoping it'll be healed in time for the show. Hence; a slightly quieter week on Digi, and next week will likely be the same, alas. Sorry in advance. One-arm or not... it's going to be quite the show. Yesterday was spent assembling the video and musical sequences into order - videos for transitions between sections, and two full-on musical numbers (we do hope you all sing along; the words will be up on the screen) - looking for gaps that need to be plugged. My other half was painting props, dealing with tickets, and other bits of organisation. It's quite the undertaking. And, of course, we learned this week that there are more seats available than we'd been told; which means we've been able to put some extra tickets on sale. They are selling steadily though, so if you can make it to the Harrow Arts Centre in Hatch End, London, next Saturday, click here now. If you're worried about attending on your lonesome... rest assured you'll be among your own kind, and I know the Digi community is very welcoming. Plus, y'know, I suspect you'll kick yourself if you miss it. Plus, because I always do, I've spent a small fortune of my own money on stuff for it, and I want people to see what we have in store. The intro alone is guaranteed to drop jaws, and I'VE SPOILED NOTHING THUS FAR. And don't forget to bring some techy tat for us to look at during the Antique's Roadshow & Tell section. Also, there's a whole afternoon of free, Digi-related activities for earlybirds, lots of special guests from the retro community, and... ohhhh... I'm very excited. JOIN US. I think it would be fair to say that, for the most part, games publishers don’t so much cover themselves in glory as they do rancid bird effluent dredged out of a clogged gutter. Whether it’s shoehorning microtransactions into the tiniest cranny (EA), shutting down much loved studios to save a few quid but then inevitably losing far more when the new team assigned the IP stink it up (Bethesda), or milking an adored franchise so hard that its teats go grey and fall off (Microsoft), pretty much everyone who loves games has at least one tale of woe where a publisher has ruined something for them. Thank criminy, then, for smaller outfits like Devolver. Not only are they dedicated to belching out absolutely excellent little indie games like My Friend Pedro and Gris across all formats, they also clearly don’t take themselves remotely seriously. Observe: they genuinely have a fictional CFO called ‘Fork Parker’, who has a Twitter account where he’s renowned for his inappropriate behaviour. And if there’s one thing we all love, it’s grown-ups doing swears and stupids on purpose. In short, if Digitiser were a publishing house they’d probably be much like Devolver. And further evidence of their ability to laugh at themselves is part one of today’s head-deficient Cerberus of reviews, which I shall commence with…now. |
