2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY - THE ANIMATED SERIES

If you're not one of the backers of Mr Biffo's Found Footage, let me tell you this: the series has been pushed back until September, and will then follow with a new ep every week for five weeks.

This new schedule allows everyone to get their summer holiday out of the way before we hold our premiere/launch party. Additionally, it gives me more time to finish the series, and film some new sequences which will be even more ambitious than the lunacy we've already attempted.

I'll keep the teasers and clips coming between now and September, but in the meantime here's one completed sequence for you to enjoy: the long-lost pilot episode of 2001: A Space Odyssey - The Animated Series.

Please share the word where you can, and subscribe to the Digitiser2000 YouTube channel to ensure you don't miss out on more of this sort of thing.

If you've not yet seen it, here's Ep 1: The Awakening.

I watched this at the weekend Biffo, great stuff. But excuse my stupid question. But is this an existing cartoon overdubbed by Ashens and co, or have you actually animated all this from scratch also?

I take that as a big compliment! I animated it myself. I tried to think of the worst possible candidate for a kids cartoon series, and decided on 2001 - having watched it as a kid, and found it mind-souringly dull.

That is astonishing. Not just the animation, but the choice of 2001 too. It did look exactly like something I may have watched when I was a kiddywink. I'm very much looking forward to the finished episodes.

It's interesting that you say 2001 is dull. I've not seen it, but I remember my parents (and I have literally no idea why the subject came up, or why I remember) saying it was the most boring film they've ever seen.

Hey that was my question!

You're right to take it as a compliment Mr Biffo, it definitely takes me back a few years to things I was watching on Saturday mornings. Animation wise that is, not so much the subject and setting.

Well, I'm flattered and relieved. All I see are the things I could've done better. Hurrah! Thanks, chaps.

I really enjoyed the latest instalment also but Grant why would Ashens and Co,the leading letting agents in Penwortham be the voice over actors? Do you really think they would have time in their busy day for such follies? THINK!

Here's my mind-souringly dull contribution: animation pedantry!

Even Hanna-Barbera and Filmation, the cost-conscious sweatshops of Saturday mornings, were not that cheap with movement. Turn down the sound and this could have been made by Dingo Pictures.

Which makes it even funnier.

Ghee Lord didn't ring true because my addled brain saw things that weren't He-Man (crotch details excluded.) This, with no similar frame of reference, looks off in a more intentional way. It's like Stanley Kubrick protesting at the concept by making it as cheaply and stupid as possible.

It didn't quite click at the comedy night, but falls into place now I can hear it properly. Excellent voice acting, and superlative mangling of the original music. Even people who winced at the prospect of "Aliens with bums" have watched the whole thing!

Right, time for my Animation Anonymous meeting.

I love the animation, it reminds me a lot of Sealab 2021 and its ilk.

Yeah, agree with the above. Liked that a lot. Also agreed on the boredom thing... An excellent film in certain ways, but the wider setting feels unexplored. A children's cartoon is obviously the best way to do so.

I love 2001 (the film, not the year) and still think this is funny. Maybe because one of my earliest TV memories is of The Great Grape Ape.

Excellent stuff Mr B. I had a big goofy grin on my face as soon as I heard the funked-up 1970's theme tune. I loved the surf guitar sting when the monolith appeared and the animation style is just perfect!
