11 CURIOUS EXAMPLES OF CHRISTIAN VIDEO GAME FAN ART

Far be it for us to criticise anybody's beliefs (unless they're, y'know, one of the bad beliefs).

When it comes to religion, providing that the religion isn't used as an excuse to drop bombs on people or their families, or round them up into camps etc. - Donald Trump - then you can do what you want, as far as we're concerned.

I mean, Digitiser2000's Mr Biffo even went to church for several years in his teens, which was a little strange looking back, given that he never really believed in God.

Still... everybody has their own way of worshipping, and it seems that some video game-playing Christians have decided to express their faith through the medium of fan art.

Here are some choice examples of this Sonic-heavy phenomenon.

11. Christian video game fan art encompasses many of the major characters. Here we see a Mario-themed crucifixion tableaux.

10. And here we find Sonic reimagined as a lost soul who found salvation through his Christian faith.

9. And here's a nice piece, even if Sonic's cheeky attitude seems somewhat tonally at odds with the rest of the content. "The hedgehog with a pious attitude".

8. That isn't to say that Christian fan artists haven't projected their faith onto characters other than Sonic, of course. Here's Master Chief, asking for forgiveness from his many sins.

7. Strangely, it's mostly Sonic who gets the Christian treatment.

6. Apparently, the trend started back in 2006 on DeviantArt.

5. Most of the art in this gallery was created by the members of the Mobian Ministry, a DeviantArt group dedicated to mostly Sonic-based Christian art.

4. The Mobian Ministry community page reads: "Though not ALL the art submitted to the club has to be Sonic-related, I do request that it be Christian in theme."

3. The Ministry insists that all art must not have a higher rating than PG-13: "Images such as pregnant canons, overly intimate situations, guns, excessive violence (yes it is possible to draw Shadow without blood dripping from his teeth)... might not be received well by parents."

2. But please... do be careful not to post My Little Pony art at Mobian Ministry: "My Little Ponies have absolutely nothing to do with Sonic or Christianity, therefore I'm sorry to say the art will be declined.  However IF said My Little Pony had Christian themes, then the appropriate gallery for it to be submitted to would be 'non-Sonic themed Christian art'.  If it was Sonic drawn AS a pony, then the appropriate gallery would be nonChristian-themed Sonic art."

1. Frankly, it's not the idea of Christian fan art that we find a bit weird - it's the wholesale appropriation of Sonic the Hedgehog as some sort of representation of Christian values. To the best of our knowledge, there has never been any Christian subtext to the Sonic games. Unless, y'know, him continuing after losing a life is meant to represent The Resurrection, or something.

Sonic seems to be a very troubled individual.

I can't help that Shadow appears to be aroused by the crucifix in 5.

It would take an actual Lazarus-style miracle to bring the Sonic franchise back from the grave.

I was a sinner, but now I am saved. Bless you, Sonic.

I mean, every Boss in Sonic '06 is a variation on The Devil
