10 NINTENDO Wii KNOCK-OFFS THAT WERE BETTER THAN THE WII U

Next week, Nintendo hammers another nail into the coffin of its Wii brand, as it unveils further details about its Switch console.

It feels like only yesterday since we all baulked at the name of the Wii - speculating that everyone would be laughing too hard to actually buy the thing. Well, we all got that wrong, though many of us put our money were our laugh glands were when the Wii U came out, and never bought one.

Please, embrace this one final chance to have a giggle at the Wii's expense, with this gallery of barely-concealed Wii bootlegs.
MIWI
Picture
MiWi? It sounds a bit like "May we?". If ever there was an inappropriately polite name for an "extreme tv entertainment system" it's that.
WIWI
Picture
Best pronounced in the manner of a flamboyant daupin, the WiWi is clearty better than the Wii, given that it not only comes with two WiWimotes, but a WiWi Classic Controler. And some sort of white disc, which might be an ashtray. Oui oui! Le pompt du cigarette du pompt.
WINI
Picture
Best pronounced in the manner of the judge at the trial of Winnie Mandela, the WiNi(tm) is better than the Wii because of all the additional buttons on the WiNimotes. As any Atari Jaguar fan will tell you, more buttons = more good quality and that.
WEE
Picture
The inevitably-named Wee isn't even a games console - it's a DVD player, giving it one major advantage over the original Nintendo Wii. Also: ha ha - Wee!
iGAMESPORTS
Picture
Look at the little blue figures at the bottom of the iGameSports (or is it GameiSports... or iSportsGame?). Look at the fellow third from the right, and the one on the very far right. Mm-hm. Yes. Yes, that is what it looks like, probably.
WOW
Picture
It's called a "Wow". What more do you need to know? Also, what's with that mysterious blue chamber on the front? Could it perhaps be used as a habitat for Sea Monkeys?
VII
Picture
Potentially named by a German megalomaniac, the Vii is a real power player, that's not only a toy - it lets you "sport together".
WIRELESS 60
Picture
The Wireless 60 includes no fewer than 48 arcade games, and 12 interactive sports games - including all the popular sports such as Boxing, Golf, Baseball, and - of course - "Wobble".
ZONE
Picture
Cleverly, the E in the Zone logo looks a bit like the W of the Wii logo when the console is displayed vertically. Subtle. Sort of. In a presumably entirely accidental way.
WU
Picture
Look at the little chap on the box of the "Pega" Sports Packs Wu (15 in 1): look at he lashes out at the imaginary birds who want to peck at his eyes and throat.

"Get away from me! Get away!"

If you can't afford a VII, you can buy a Wow and a set of VII decals to pretend to be a real power player.
This won't let you "sport together" though :(

I like how nearly all of these are manufactured in the same factory - the controllers are all the same (almost).
The Wow and the VII are the same product in different boxes.

Leave them plugged in overnight and watch your house burn down by the morning. Fun for the whole family!

And just look at the controllers... I'm loving the twin A and B buttons. How to distinguish for typing in cheat codes?

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, top B, bottom A.

The extra A/B buttons on these things are almost always either turbo A/B or just exact duplicates of the existing A/B. Even though most of them run on 16 and 32-bit chipsets, the controllers never moved beyond NES level.

In fairness, you got the same effect for more money with the X-Box 360, so these knock-offs at least have the price advantage.

One of the things I've realised from this article was how successful the Wii U actually was in sales. All these consoles combined didn't sell anything like as well. Kudos for a great platform, Wii U!

Think of the poor kids opening these at Christmas and the sinking feeling they had after realising that Santa hates them

You've got to separate the Wii from the chaff.

Boom...

I remember seeing a MiWi not that long ago in a junk shop near me. All the rest are new to mii.
