10 FACTUAL INACCURACIES IN THE BBC'S GTA DRAMA

Last night the BBC premiered The Gamechangers, a drama apparently aimed at sexing up the making of Rockstar Games' controversial Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

Even before the show's screening it was courting the ire of the game's makers - with Rockstar threatening the BBC with a writ, banning it from using footage of its games.

After the showing, Rockstar's official Twitter account sent the BBC the following message: "Was Basil Brush busy? What exactly is this random, made up bollocks?".

Others on Twitter have since come out to lampoon the show's Hollywoodisation of game development, factual distortions, and other liberties. Here are just 10 things The Gamechangers got utterly wrong.

10. DAN HOUSER

POTTER
Daniel Radcliffe's portrayal of Rockstar boss Dan Houser has come in for criticism, due to Radcliffe's insistence on eating a moist ham in every scene - a food that Houser is never known to have actually eaten. During several key moments, it's virtually impossible to hear the dialogue, due to the sound of Radcliffe's lips smacking together, and his mumbled insistence that "This is a really moist ham".
9. THE GAME THEY ARE WORKING ON ISN'T EVEN GTA
Picture
Due to copyright restrictions, screenwriters had to remove all reference to Grand Theft Auto from the drama. Instead, it has been replaced by a fictional game that's even more likely to cause offence: Christ-Puncher. Players are seen hunting down a terrified Messiah, before pinning him to the ground, and fisting him in the thorax until it becomes nothing but grisly mince and bacon bits. "I forgive you", whimpers the digitised voice of the Lord, from his mushy, drooling, mouth.
8. ROCKSTAR HQ IS A FUTURISTIC SPACE BASE
Picture
The BBC version of Rockstar HQ is a sci-fi super base, with teleportation machines, holograms, submarine dock, and a massive centrifuge room, where unruly employees are sent to experience powerful centrifugal forces while being pelted with miniature ramps.
7. HUMPTY DUMPTY WORKS AT ROCKSTAR
Picture
The nursery rhyme character Humpty Dumpty is inexplicably shown in several scenes as working at Rockstar HQ. During one particularly memorable moment, he is seen weeping silently, after a laughing Dan Houser forces him to eat an omelette that contained the remains of his family. "I'm never going to be able to put myself back together after this tragedy," laments Dumpty, clumsily, before Houser topples a drinks cabinet onto him.
6. EVERYONE AT ROCKSTAR IS KILLED AND GOES TO HEAVEN
Picture
One of the strangest sequences in The Gamechangers sees everyone at Rockstar Studios dying suddenly of a guilt-related illness, after being accused of corrupting the world's youth. When they arrive at the gates of Heaven, a furious, bizarrely shuddering, Saint Peter asks them what they're doing there, before shooing them away with a big broom, and waggling a massive, felt tongue at them.
5. THE VISITING TEETH
Picture
Early on in The Gamechangers, Houser is shown nervously anticipating the arrival of The Visiting Teeth. Teased throughout the duration of the film, The Visiting Teeth finally arrive in the last ten minutes, and are shown to be a set of floating, disembodied dentures, which Houser and the Rockstar development team must clean until the teeth agree to leave - only then are they able to resume their work.
4. OFFICE ROBOT
Picture
Midway through the drama, Houser is shown becoming frustrated at the slow progress of development, and decides to invent a robot, called Aubrey-9, to speed up the progress. He gravely remarks that he hopes it doesn't "Go the same way as Aubreys one through eight...". For the duration of the film, Aubrey-9 can be seen tottering around the office in the back of shots, knocking over plants, setting fire to chairs, and oozing carb juice out of its eye holes.
3. DAN HOUSER JUNIOR
Picture
The birth of Dan Houser's son, Houser Junior, is clearly intended to be a moving moment, but the graphic depiction of the event - as the infant boy emerges from a glistening, fleshy aperture in Houser's abdomen, accompanied by the stuttering, avian squawking of his father - seems grossly out of context.
2. RAVE SEQUENCES
Picture
There are two 15-minute long rave sequences in the film, which occur abruptly and appear not to feature any of the main characters.
1. SWIMBLE
Picture
Dan Houser is shown as having a spiritual animal guru, in the shape of a benevolent dolphin called Swimble, who he visits for guidance and advice. Unfortunately, Swimble is killed by a truck when Houser drags it by the tail out of the sea and across a road. Haunted by his actions, Houser is seen trying to replace Swimble by jury-rigging a second dolphin guru out of canned tuna and a number of smaller dolphins.
